TASK 3
SHOPPING AT UHU'S

The fashion adventure continues...

For this task, I asked our beloved foxy fox .Uhu / Harry (who won Season 3 of LidlTerm)  to collaborate with the Season 5 designers. Harry created four mini collections and each designer was assigned one of the four collections, based on what I (Filip) believed would be the most challenging for each contestant. The task was about having each designer insert themselves into one of the collections. There were multiple criteria to this task: the look that each designer made should have both commerciality and conceptuality to it, it should reflect the designer's personal style while also matching the looks in each mini collection. Harry is here this week to give his comments, after all,  it is his creative work that is the focal point of this task.

Let's go shopping bitches!

LC22

For me, this look is the equivalent of smoking a cigarette in the morning (I'm not a smoker but I can imagine). This look hits so damn hard. I don't like it: I need it. The outfit has something seductive and equally mischievous to it, it's fashion that reminds me of Spanish cubism, Pablo Picasso is one artist that comes to mind. The sections of this look abruptly interrupt each other but without harming the beauty and the rhytm that is ingrained in this outfit, the structure of this look comes across as a bit architectural even. That coat is incredibly tricky to pull off, mostly due to the fact that it easily comes across as costumey once rendered in more neutral colors. To show it off here in a flirty turquoise and with black buttons gave it an intriguing 1960's flair. This design has the vibe of Barcelona to it. The purple hair was a good choice as that purple made the outfit's color palette sing a little louder, black hair wouldn't have enhanced the colors as much, in fact it would've made the black details a little less special. This design feels true to your aesthetic but it also comes across as you pushing yourself a bit more out of your comfort zone in order to meet the aesthetic of Harry's collection. One brilliant thing you replicated is that Harry's left look kind of tickles you with the wine red color: the red elements of your dress achieve the same thing. I would've switched out the blue heels to something more neutral but that's just me being extremely picky. Fantastic job, Elysse!

Harry saidThere's no denying the cohesiveness with this. Yeah the blue could've been slightly shifted to match better, but I don't care. The underlayer of this jacket is.. omg its superb. The layering and the way you have placed each colour.. urg Chef's kiss. I can imagine you pulling colour out, swapping it and putting more in for hours to find the perfect match. It really feels complete and a lot of effort put in. Super tasteful.

Snawl

This dress reveals itself to whoever beholds it. The longer you look at it, the more details you see and the impact of each element become clearer and stronger. The composition of the top is graceful even though it looks slightly tangled, there is nothing forced about it, which it often looks like when one puts so many layers on top of each other close to the neck. In this case there's a harmony, probably because you worked with two neutral colors (white & black) and mainly focused on the color yellow and finding it's greatest potential. Had you used more yellow then the effect would've been smaller. It's like the use of a lemon in a dessert: you have to find the right amount and that's what you did here. You created a dress that is very innocent in it's silhouette and in which the prints pull the weight here - while you also kept the styling choices experimental. You really thought about this one: you understood that a generic client doesn't want an experimental shape but rather something that makes a noise within a more conventional and traditional frame. Meanwhile, the styling sells this fantasy of what the customer could look like. I'm greatly impressed by all the factors you considered and dealt with, you hit every criteria in relation to the task.  The rusty red pearls in the hair are so extremely fabulous, and I like that they look sparsely applied. There's a nice balance as well with the other looks in the collection. This dress isn't exactly the most technically advanced that we've seen, but you get a 10 for managing to merge commerciality with conceptuality.

Harry saidI have loved the almost 'dirty' take on this piece to add to this collection, the pairing of the hair with all the different black details ran down you is so nicely done, I think it could have gone messy real fast, this truly shows a level of skill that is admirable for us Habbos. Maybe if I'm nitpicking I would've liked to see the tiniest bit of red, maybe on a shoe or in an article of clothing, as the yellow is right next to the whites so it predominantly just looks black and white. But that's minor, love the attitude to it.

Cassandra.Goth

Mostly, there's a limited scope of silhouettes and combinations that one can come up with on a (non-retro) Habbo avatar imager. Sure, now and then a designer really pushes themselves in their experimentation and come up with something fantastic that hasn't been done before. You sent me set of looks which all look like a variation of something I've seen before - except this one. You were a bit surprised and concearned with the way it looks like the model is sporting a fabric cock with balls. Sure, it kind of looks like that. It should be mentioned though that in fashion, it's not uncommon for designs to play with sex or body parts. One example is the popular t-shirt in which two fruits are located where a woman's breast are. This looks like an Icelandic bikini, it's fresh and it catches my attention. Cold resortwear. All of you designers can get away with pretty much anything and have several problems with a look as long as it fulfills one criteria: that it is exciting and new. I love the way the chest item plays with the lower side of the bikini, even though they're not connected at all. The slightly avant garde hat helps bring the volume up on this look and overall you succeeded with creating something that is in the same quirky rhytm of the other looks in the collection.

Harry saidI was not expecting someone to do swimwear with this collection.. but I kinda dig it. This look is fully youthful, fun, and soft! This is a compliment, it feels almost childish, in a way where it's suitable for a front cover on a fashion magazine. The hat and mask is pretty smart, bringing in the softness and the asymmetry to bring it down, without the asymmetry I think this would have definitely lacked something. The bathing suit isn't anything extraordinary design-wise, maybe even so you could have edited it a little more as it feels the button does most of the work.

Harry's fourth collection is a play on flat textures against more rich and grainy textures, so it delights me that you included a dress that's more on the simple side as a base for this look. I rarely find that designers make shoulder bows work but in this instance, rendering them in a darker green made them feel more luxurious somehow. The orange composition is neat but it's actually not what captures my interest, instead it's the smaller details like the barely visible green strip and the yellow piece on the dress. Does it play well with the other two looks in the collection? I'd say so. I believe your look would've had an even greater color depth had you involved a darker brown somehow and not been so heavy on the orange, but overall this is both experimental and editorial.

Harry saidOolala, someone went for layers on layers, and I think it helps give a unique feel comparatively. I think the only thing I would've liked it a bit more resemblance with colour. But other than that, I love the attitude, the pieces of clothing meshed together to create the silhouette, and the pose is also spot on for this design. V fun and joyful!

SealChowderr

You're a person with a lot of heart and that's often mirrored in your designs. They feel down to earth and true to your artisticness. Your work is always believable: I've never looked at something you've made and had any doubts that you love your stuff and would probably wear something similar irl. To understand yourself and land in a specific comfortable area as an artist is a magnificent thing and it also comes with a perk: your work comes across as more confident and thus a little more attractive. Although it's been 4 years since the feathered cowl had it's own little pandemic on Habbo.com and especially within the PR scene, I am still extremely tired of it. You have to jump through a lot of hoops to render it in a unique way nowadays. I do appreciate the textural richness that is on display, but quite frankly, this is not a very innovative or exciting design comparatively. The orange skirt with the orange heels just feel like an afterthought. It doesn't look bad, it actually looks neat, but if I only judged you designers on what looks good instead of technical aspects and innovation, then this competition would go absolutely nowhere or turn into a beauty pageant. I'm sorry Seal, but this doesn't do much for me. There are two details I love however. First of all, the black stripes on your model's upper arms are a bit fascinating and I wish you had constructed a whole dress around that idea. Second of all, I do enjoy the way you kind of built your own earring through matching the textures of the feathered cowl so greatly.

Harry saidThere are aspects of this that I really love, the elongated collar you created around the neck is superb. And the shape of this whole outfit is really nice. It is also pretty cohesive with the collection, goes well. I would've probably tried to make the textured orange details around the torso stand out a little more, maybe by using a hint of white or black under/below it, maybe the orange on the belt changing to this. I think that would've really let the work you did in the torso shine alot more, as it gets slightly flushed out with the amount of orange. I really enjoy it though, it has real strength to the attitude of it.

Peyton125

Peyton, this look solidifies that you are a visionary. This isn't where fashion is right now but it is where fashion is heading next: sporty with a hint of urban with the utilization of one or two prints. The pants are great, they have a Mediterranean vibe to them while the top has a more western/Scandinavian experimental look. The clash between the two is so unexpected and yet they make music together. It's a warmer urban design that I could see in a trendy boutique window in Barcelona. Overall I'd say this is R&B fashion. I like that you kept the head accessories in white: it makes them serve a point but they also dont' pull focus from the greater elements in your outfit. The bag is adorable and the black open skirt over the pants give this look a bit more edge and brings it more into androgynous territory. You looked at Harrys collection and instead of replicating his colors and their exact balance to each other, you found inspiration in his rusty red (which is used sparsely) and made it the focus point of your outfit. It's a great strategy as it puts more you into Harry's collection, you  not only compliment the collection but you also build on it. For two weeks in a row you've blown me away.

Harry saidNow this had me grinning from ear to ear in excitement, there's something about it... I think you are IT, this outfit screams IT girl, and actually IT anyone, love that it could be worn by any gender easily. But yeah, it's so stylish.. and it doesn't need to scream to be impactful. So nicely edited, you are allowing the clothes to breath and have fun. Yeah can't fault it, one of my favorites this week.

Sparkle

You gave me 5 looks to choose from and I told you that neither were that great, advicing you to start over. It's not exactly what you want to hear in a consultation but I'm happy you did start over. This outfit is so much nicer than all of the other five combinend. The dress, in which  the black fades into a deep blue, is both beautiful and intriguing. You actually make it so that the big feather item looks like the top of the dress. I love the flair this has, it's volumunious and overall an exuberant look. The color clash on the feather is gorgeous as well. The earring is perhaps a bit overkill but I don't mind it. You get points for paying respect to the oddness of Harrys second look, while also relating to this high-end, slightly wacky London style customer that is his first look. Your choice to utilize a striped black & white jacket gave the look a bit of a younger edge, it's a little punk. It also made the blue and the orange in your look more special: to showcase something less is the way to create more out of something. Very solid work, Sarah.

Harry saidAt first, this look doesn't stand out to be as bold as maybe some of the others this week.. but when you think about the functionality, it does really work. You've managed to merge the heavyness of the 1st outfit with the lightness of the 2nd, it truly feels like an intermix of both. There is something just not as daring that I would've liked this outfit to be.. and I can't quite put my finger on it. I do love the way you kind of mimicked the long stretched out lines from the collection though.

ohku

I had to do a double take when I saw this. I don't know HOW, and I didn't even think it was possible, but you've constructed what looks like a dog or a wolf's face on the t-shirt! It's adorable and chic, although it is a playful fashion piece you've constructed, it doesn't go into childish territory. I must tell you, ohku, that so far I have been greatly impressed by you as a contestant. You don't rely on items or tricks, instead you get your fingers dirty and dig deep into the dirt. You're not held back by any abstract, inofficial rules of this field (the PR community), you do things your way and you have fun with it. That's a winning concept, you haven't bored me once either. I love the inclusion of denim into the collection. Collection number four is a bit more gritty, kind of New York in the sunrise and granola for breakfast vibes. The denim jeans correlate with accessories present in the collection and it was a bold move of you to utilize the fact that there could be a whole lot more of it. I have to point out that Harry's collection is about a funky glamour with a hint of grunge to it and I think you didn't replicate that feeling, your look is in a more casual category. The shoes, which are just ok, are a missed opportunity to make this look a little more high-end like the other two looks. Also, you were one of two designers who made the charming choice to include glasses so that each outfit in the collection features one pair.

Harry saidI'm always conflicted when people use the dino wings, as sometimes it just stands out too much. But the way you outlined it with the yellow is a smart choice. I love the colour story here too, works really well with the collection. I'm not super sold on the styling aspects here, I think your hair and earpieces drag the look down quite a bit for me unfortunately... I think this design just needed a sprinkle more of flow and a bit more editing put into it and it would've worked really well.

.Cow.

A good look but overall, mixed results. I find that I love the detail work more than the overall dress. The fact that you more or less mirror Harry's pale blue, on his look to the left, on your shoes does so much for your look. It overall has a problem of being a bit too intense, it's as if the orange is fighting with the other colors. Although Harry utilizes the same colors as you, he structured his looks so that each color is within it's section so that each part gets a moment to shine. With your dress, it's a bit all over the place, it comes across as a bit overdesigned. I love that the bag and belt merge together, it's hard to see where the bag ends and the belt begins. It must also be said that this is one of the coolest looking uses of the oversized scarf we've had, here it looks like an abstract 60's style print. You have a spark to you, Kaytlin, but I still think you can reach higher ground than this.

Harry saidI don't think anyone can say that this outfit isn't a perfect match with this collection. You have instantly created a captivating peice which stands its ground next to these 2 peices. It feels full of purpose, and full of useability in the real life world. I love the colours, wouldn't change a thing about them, you've used them really well to create this outfit. Goodjob, love the wearability.

doglover

Chris, you never bore me. As a designer, that is something golden and whatever your creative process it, I advice you to hold onto it hard. The number one crime in fashion is to be boring. The golden visor is lovely and it adds a bit of a sporty aura. The fur dress is really unexpected and I commend you on the construction of it, my absolute favorite part are the shreds of fur around the armhole, you colored them in a slightly brighter red in order for them to pop a little more, which is masterful of you. I have some less positive notes though. The red fur that embraces your model's face doesn't blend well with the cowl and overall, your outfit shines bright on it's own but it doesn't connect that well with the other two looks in Harry's collection. Harry utilized more flat textures and went more for interesting prints and color clashes. Thus, this heavily textured fur dress doesn't achieve a synergy with the other collection pieces. The involvement of black can also be seen as him playing with shades, which you understood and succeeded to incorporate. The kimono (bow) belt in this instance comes across as a bit too juvenile or sweet, while Harry's collection has a more mature, urban party vibe to it. One detail I do love is that below the belt it looks like the white part of the skirt is frazzled and frayed. Is this a commercial look? I'm 50/50 on it, I believe there is a very specific customer group who would be all over it, but it's not for the masses. Overall, this is solid work and I am eager to see what you come up with next.

Harry saidThis is another standout for me this week. You have completely enticed me, the soft white fabric, against the bows, and the fringes is so lovely and warming. I love the shape of the and the choice to keep the arms bare, it definitely needed it, perfect amount of skin to let the outfit shine. I think the star of this show is this collar you have created, a layered, high rise collar. I have to commend you on making the beard not look like a beard. Yeah I would not change a single thing, another of my favorites tonight. Love it.

Lovely nose contour. I didn't think much of this when I first saw it, my initial thought was that it looked a little bit unfinished. Now that I've had a few days to taste it, I'm more positive to it. The asymmetrical skirt that is achieved through the belt is something we haven't seen before. Along with the boots, the lower half of this look has a 70's London punk scene vibe to them, which I find great. It's a little bit ugly but in the good way, it scratches that itch we all tsometimes have to see something that isn't so pretty and neat. The construction of the tattoo gloves, which extend all the way up to the model's cheeks, is fabulous: it's graphically a bit toned down which makes it more commercial, but the idea is unique enough to make it high fashion. Although I am annoyed at how simple the tank top is, I realized how it is a point in your favour. Commercialy, it's the simple things that sell. A majority of costumers are scared of fashion that does too much or forces the costumer into a very specific look. What you're offering here is a simple canvas which is framed by edgier accessories and pieces. Does it work well with the other two looks in the collection? Mostly. Harry's looks have a cleanliness to them, a bit of organized chaos. Your look offers a certain kick that the other two also have, but your design is a bit more rough around the edges, creating a bit of a divide between your look and the other two.

Harry saidWell this is an impact. You are clearly one that knows how to make a design which stands out, and you also know how to manipulate clothing pieces to create the effect you want. This is so rock and roll, and so stylish and editorial at the same time, love the mix of those two things. I'm not entirely convinced that the belt, shoes and nose work perfectly inline with this collection, but I'm not mad because they work so well, especially the bottom half, it looks as if you have made a fully custom textile. Goodjob!

nicrobbo95

Initially, taking a look at this, I judged it as a bit of a mix of PR trends that have already been done so many times, but when I take a closer look at the elements of this look, I realize that it's foundation is something entirely different rather than a fringe skirt or a poncho. The yellow belt, the bulky extension of the poncho, the shockingly green shoes and the careful green earring - it's so fabulous. I get a little bit of a fashion fever from it. This truly is the Trojan horse of Project Runway: it's true potential reveals itself only after you've initially dismissed the look. Although your model is covered up, I get a sense of flowiness and freedom from it. Perhaps due to the fact that you build your look upon many layers while the diagonal belt strap somehow gives the look a statuesque feeling to it. This is giving 60's mod fashion meets 70's groovy hippie - which when you think about it is how you could describe this collection and lots of Harry's art in general (no shade, I say that with love). The brown print is fabulous and it's something I haven't seen in a long time: it's refreshing. Is it commercial? I could see a million Taylor Swift fans wanting to look like this, so yes. Although your outfit makes it own sound, it is a sound that is relative to the ones that Harry's looks are making. Keep up the good work, Nicole.

Harry saidI think this collection has really bold/clean shapes to it, I am not sure if you managed to convey this entirely. I can't say if you put the most effort into this, as the layers kinda get all muddled up, I think for a short-term this outfit would've been really nice. And it has a really nice colour palette to it too, I love that. I like the one earring with the hair too. Just the outfit doesn't make complete sense to me.

VERDICT

Congratulations LC22 - you are the winner of the third task of Season 5. Your design exemplifies how you are able to play with dimensions and illusions, as well as how you can take items and merge them into something completely new. This design is like a Spanish cubism artwork that was turned into clothes, and a central aspect as to why this look is so succesful is because it contains something you do best: unapologetically celebrate femininity. Spectacular work, Elysse.

We find Peyton125 in the top for a second week in a row, followed by Snawl and nicrobbo95. This was a week in which it wasn't just about coming up with an outfit that looked good: it had to hit multiple criteria as well. The three of you are in the top this week because you each found that sweet spot inbetween commerciality and conceptuality - while at the same time you brought your own style into a collection that you also managed to match. This was trickier than what I might've made it out to be. Congratulations to the three of you!

I'm sorry SealChowderr, but you have been eliminated from LidlTerm Season 5. It's never fun to eliminate anyone in a longterm, but it's especially painful to eliminate a person who is so eager and willing to learn and grow in a competitive setting like this. You are the ideal contestant for someone like me and your outfit does look nice, I'm afraid I just saw the least originality in your look this week. If you continue to experiment and search for your own aesthetic, I believe you could come back in the future and crush it. Thank you very much for taking part and please know that you're very appreciated.
