TASK 1 STANDING OUT IN THE CROWD

Welcome to the first panel of LidlTerm season 3!

Last year we were treated to a season of insane talent and designers bringing their A-game. In the end, Razzing, Snawl and alydaman produced 3 incredible collections and alydaman was chosen as the winner. This year we are moving forward to new trends, new inspirations and a new context/world in which we design in. It is a true privilege that I get to arrange a third season,

For the first task, the designers were tasked with creating an attention-grabbing outfit for a New York billboard. One criteria for the task was that the design should showcase what the designer's aesthetic is in 2022, another criteria was that the outfit should be able to pull focus from other billboards and advertisements.

Let's see how they did!

cinthia vs. snawl

CINTHIA

I love your outfit so it striked me as odd why your design, with so many flashy elements to it, has a bit of a struggle to stand out. Then it hit me what is going on here. Your model isn't showing their face on the billboard which is why it doesn't grab your attention as much as some of the other billboards do, it's a bit anonymous due to the absence of a face to connect with. If you think about it, have you ever seen a major fashion ad in which the model isn't showing their face? I love looks from the back and I make them all the time, I just think you fell into a bit of a trap here as you didn't figure out all elements requiried to make a 10/10 billboard, don't let that get you down though because I promise you I probably would've made the same ''mistake''. Looking at the outfit apart from the billboard, I hear a symphony but also electronic music when I look at it. Lots of gorgeous and exciting textures. It was a risky move to choose those dad pants, they're charming but they're not matchy matchy and yet the contrast of having pants that don't match somehow improved the entire look. This design is like medicine, it makes me feel good. Good job, you were just a bit unlucky with this one. Promise me you won't stop playing with colors in your design process because you're a pro at that.

snawl

The first time I saw this design I wasn't very intrigued by it. Although I still find that this concept didn't reach it's full potential, and you were the first one to state, I was surprised to see how your design came alive on the billboard. That's the intriguing thing about this task, some looks became elevated on the billboard and some others didn't really have any further impact once presented on the billboard. I adore the bohemian scarf and it took me some time to fully realize that this color palette of yours is more thoughtfully chosen than what it might seem like. Your entire design looks wet which I really like. It's also very charming how you chose to define your aesthetic in this challenge by creating something that relates to your final collection from 2021, while there are also new elements to it. It's quite difficult to say what you would've needed to do to fully make this look 10/10, perhaps a different top that integrated into the scarf in some cool way? I don't know. Anywho, good job, I know I sound like a broken record but you managed to combinate conceptuality with commerciality.

zoetic vs. razzing

ZOETIC

Based on this design I've learned that your instinct for color is insane, the color palette you chose is one of my all time favorites. It's not just about what colors you chose but also how much you used of each color. For example, your limited use of the darker orange is perfect because you give the viewer just a sample taste instead of the whole icecream, it leaves me hungry for more in the best of ways. Your smart use of color in relation to the items you chose made for a dress overflowing with various rich textures. This is a very strong starting point in this competition. I usually dislike clunky heels with short skirts but from an editorial standpoint they make sense. Having said that, we've all seen variations of this dress many times before (just not done this well), if you want to win this season you must apply your incredible eye for color onto more original and experimental structures. Your billboard evokes the feeling that an adventure is about to happen, great job.

razzing

This design surprises me, both in good and bad ways. I think we haven't really seen this side of you before so I applaud that and I believe you executed your vision to the fullest, meaning it comes across as an edited look. Last season you showed that you are an absolute professional at using various colors, and this was an excellent time for you to utilize that talent. I know I told you all that you must not resort to looking like a medhue parrot in order to create an attention-stealing design, but your drab color palette made for a slightly dull billboard. This woman looks like a cool, fashionable individual who I want to hang out with but I wouldn't look twice at her outfit in the sea of people and advertisements that is New York. On a brighter note, I am crazy about the pants and I wish to see more of this side from you moving forward, but I also want to see the Peter I know who can mix and match beautiful colors and prints.

prettytiara123 vs. bluedragon1994
no winner

prettytiara123

It's not easy saying this because I have always liked you: this is not good. It's not bad either though. Your model looks stylish and well put together, you also came up with a pleasing color palette. The problem is that 85% of your design has been done to death, even back in 2009. I will always have love PR-clothes from 10-15 years ago and I believe you don't need to follow modern trends to succeed in fashion, but you must bring something new to the table in order to survive a longterm in which basically everyone brings it. You clearly have good taste and an eye for styling, I like the bag with the double strings. One day you could become the one to beat if you'd just experiment more with different structures.

bluedragon1994

How do I even judge this look? It's a 1920's flapper costume. It would be pointless for me to analyze the details of it because this isn't really a PR-look, even you admitted to going for a literal 1920s design in 2022. Sure, it would've been cool to see a design that mixes those two decades but this is not a PR outfit. Project Runway is about fashion and sure, fashion brings inspiration from past times and sometimes even costumes, but I know you don't believe that lots of women dress like this or would want to. This is a Cozzie Change look and your approach to this task makes me wonder if you knew what you were getting yourself into. On a positive note, you've been nothing but game this entire time and I've loved your attitude. I also find that you have a knack for creating characters that cheer you up (the original design had her holding a glass while smiling but I had to remake this design due to severe issues with the resolution). We shall see if the task winner gives you a second chance or not.

herbymainsted vs. gnge

herbymainsted

It's always a privilege to have you Herby! You have always been about drama, volume and impactful color choices so I find that you did a great job at being true to yourself as a designer in this task. Please never lose that because it's taken you far many times, it even gave you the Snawlterm S7 win! There are several aspects of this design that I love but overall it's messy and in serious need of some editing. This was a task in which one had to mix conceptuality with commerciality, you nailed the first aspect but in what way is this outfit commercial? How many women or men would look at this outfit and think that they would want to walk around looking like King Henry VIII? It's just too costumey Herby, with the right fixes this could've looked like a couture gown instead. I love the belt idea but in this context it makes the look extremely overdesigned and was the tattoo really necessary? I will say I find that your model has my favorite make-up of the week, absolutely stunning. Please continue to bring the drama and the volume in the next task but also think of the critiques you've been given.

gnge

There is plenty of nudity to this look, at the same time your model is also covered up in many ways? It's interesting and difficult to portray. Here we have a cheeky design which would get some New York cab drivers to crash into a lamp post, meaning that it's a very effective look. You successfully managed to create a design that is commercial yet also conceptual. Smart move to utilize purple in both lighter and darker shades, a full on neon purple look would've come off as desperate. I adore the combination of the furry textures on the arms in relation to the illusion of a color splash against your model's chest, it's beautfiul. I applaud how you managed to pull of a design suitable for a girl group artist while the design also comes across as something that could have been submitted for a painting/museum task. Fashion is at it's best when it's new, fun and creative - you tick all three boxes. This is editorial and yet lots of women would want to buy this, I haven't been able to stop thinking about this look since I first saw it. A+

ANTHEIA-CERES VS. AUSTIN@TROY

ANTHEIA-CERES

This is tacky, and not in the way that I find charming. You’ve utilized blue leopard print and white leopard print in one single design so you can’t blame me for saying that, and yes it is leopard because you’ve used a king’s cape. It’s interesting but it’s also ugly, however I will always prefer ugly and interesting over boring and safe. The jumpsuit underneath is actually really cool and well made. You could’ve ditched the cape and the earrings and boom, there’s a commercial and fabulous outfit. To say less is more is such a cliché but in this case it’s evident. The idea with the extravagant fabric on one side is exciting but this was not the right execution. In my head this is already an iconic look for the season but only because of how bizarre it is, you’ve mixed dystopian elements with early modern times?! The problem is your lack of editing, you submitted this 22 minutes after I told you that you were welcome to take part. That tells me you didn’t think long or hard enough about the task, which is a shame because you’re one of the most original designers I’ve seen and you’re better than that.

AUSTIN@TROY

Welcome back Alanio! You were a breakout star in LidlTerm S1 and I think I'm not the only one who has missed seeing you come up with unique designs. To succeed in this task one had to bring attitude with their look, seems like that was a piece of cake for you as you've never designed anything in which your model doesn't look confident as f*ck in. I find that this dress is like a conventional dress that lots of women desire having in their closet, only for it to become maliciously corrupted with a virus of some kind. The contrast of the soothing blues with the twisted, gory red is neat. There's a lot of details to look at, yet it's also not overdesigned in any way. That means you created an attention-grabbing look with just the necessary amount of design aspects without coming off as desperate for the attention. It's not even about your model demanding attention, I'm a bit shy to look at your model because she is too cool for me. This is a silhouette you've resorted to many times and in the past when you've challenged yourself in that area you've floundered most of the times. Moving forward I will once again ask you to experiment with new design structures and step out of your comfort zone.

alydaman vs. joelings

alydaman

You told me you'd shift your approach for season 3 of LidlTerm as you won the previous one. You specifically said that you'd try to have more fun and not be so obsessed with winning. You struck gold with this new approach of yours. When we joked about you creating a cigarette inspired design I really didn't think you'd actually consider it. I didn't even think it was possible to pull off a design that in any way looks like it utilizes cigharettes but here you are, knocking it out of the park. I believe the music video Telephone by Lady Gaga & Beyoncé is an obvious inspiration here, your model is attitude personified. Utilizing the bee tattoo and some other accessory to give new textures to the leather jacket, I mean come on, give the others a break because that jacket is really f*cking cool. This design is insane in it's concept and insane in it's execution. Is it commercial? Hmm, I don't think a lot of women would want to wear a dress made out of cigarettes, but that jacket would sell like hot cakes. Once again you've established yourself as the one to beat and I don't envy you as you're going to have to work your ass off to live up to everyone's expectations from here on.

joelings

Welcome to LidlTerm Joelings! I have competed against you in the past and followed you in a couple of other longterms I wasn't part of and for a long time you have been a name I've wanted to have on my longterm. Having said that, I want to like this outfit but I'm just indifferent towards it. I believe you're a designer who often stays within your comfort zone, whether you think I'm right or wrong I wish for you to prove me wrong if you get to stay for task 2. The colors are nice and the combination of the feathered cowl with that top is intriguing, but other than that we've seen designs like this one many times before. Just go check out season 1 of LidlTerm, also known as Battle of the Feathered Cowls. I must say that this is a very commercial design and that it would sell quite well, it just lacks in innovation. I also hate the skirt because it looks like a table cloth, the rest of the design is too cool for it. I want to see more from you and I cross my fingers I will.

lidl-wayne vs. fierce.needles

FIERCE.NEEDLES

You have paid your dues in the PR-world and you're a well known name, yet I believe most people would struggle to define your design aesthetic in 2022 before this submission of yours. I overuse the word love a lot but this is a look that I am truly in love with, it might even be one of my favorite longterm looks ever. There's an old school rock & roll vibe to your design, it comes off as effortless. This design represents a magical aspect of Project Runway: you didn't utilize a ton of stuff to create something, instead you went with simple elements mixed with good styling and a neat color palette. The result is a perfect look on a model who is oozing of f*ck-you-if-you-don't-like-it. This is nothing but good design and good fashion instincts. I see parts of Freddie Mercury and Mick Jagger in this which I'm rarely treated to in any longterm. Is this a commercial design? Yes, because most of the times you can get customers to want almost anything as long as the model is selling it and in this case a lot of men would look at this and want to be this effortless and cool man full of attitude. Incredible work Jared!

uhu vs. lc22

uhu

You are the most avant garde designer Habbo has ever seen, so I was curious to see how you would apply your aesthetic in a setting in which fashion is at its most commercial state. Fashion billboards do whatever they can to grab people's attention, they also don't utilize fashion that is too crazy or experimental as they still want to appeal to a customer group who could imagine wearing what is being advertised and hence not scare them with fashion that is too out there. I'm impressed you succeeded in creating a design that is commercial and yet very Uhu, you didn't have to tone down the volume as a designer, you just switched into a different rhytm. The blue, black and white dress is to die for and I even want to make it in real life, which means you've inspired me. I find that a lot of designers finish their looks and then go ''ahh why not pop on an earring'' when it doesn't do anything for the look (sometimes it even makes it too busy), in this case the use of an earring is perfect. I must state that I don't think the green was the best choice here, it's a risk that didn't pay off. You kept your avant garde fingerprints in this task with the black shapes on your face, the amount is suitable for the context. I'm eager to see what you come up with next.

lc22

I didn't think this was a very good outfit once you submitted it, however, seeing the end result changed my mind. Your design became elevated once presented on the billboard. That's the thing about fashion, in some contexts it just doesn't work and in others it does. Everything below the sweater is cool, captivating and fresh. The sweater makes sense but it's also a bit boring and too safe. This task was about creating a commercial design that also leaves your fingerprints as a designer, in which you succeeded. The task was also about creating something truly attention-grabbing and I find that you only met that criteria halfways, it's not an invisible design but it's also not something one would look twice at due to the many distractions that New York city offers. Moving forward I challenge you to create something that is not so matchy-matchy and to experiment with different colors that are not similar to each other. For example, the shoes are suitable but your design could've been further elevated with an un expected choice. Overall this is a succesful design.

nicrobbo95 vs. buyartpop - (tie)

nicrobbo95

You've created a rockstar dress. Throughout the years we've seen many takes on that dress with the curved stripes, this is by far the best one I've seen. The choice to incorporate green, orange and red onto a black and white look was unexpected as well as brilliant. It shows you don't play it safe and take risks. This task was about advertising yourself by defining what your aesthetic is as a designer and you did a fantastic job, it leaves me wanting to see so much more from you. I rarely see gloves so suited to a design, usually I find that gloves don't belong in most outfits but in this case the whole look would've been less succesful without them. I hear rock music when I look at this, which means you've created a fantasy and a story through fashion which is high praise. I will say you have a lot to improve regarding styling: the hat is just too much, the make-up is bad and I think you played it a bit safe with the shoes. I know black heels goes with any design but I also believe it's easy to forget that an exciting and bold shoe can take a look to a whole other level.

BUYARTPOP

Yay the first lingerie look on LidlTerm! I wanted you on this season because you are one of few who design outfits in which you can immediately tell it’s your work. This is a very sexy look, it impresses me that you managed to create a base that is very commercial while the other part (everything above the shoulders) is conceptual and playful. That means a lot of women would look at this billbord and think wow I’d never pull of that entire look even if I wanted to, I’m not that wild, but I could be at least a little wild with the lingerie and kimono jacket so I’ll buy it. That is what fashion marketing is all about, sending the customer a message of this fun sexy spontaneous person could be you! - the built in ”glow in the dark” eyelashes was a brilliantly creative idea and I adore the heels. When using this much black you must create an interesting silhouette which you definitely did. You are already a designer with a very defined aesthetic so your challenge was to produce a look that summarizes that aesthetic while also not overthinking it, in which you succeeded. Thank you Sonny!

verdict

This was a strong week with a variety of different aesthetics and approaches to the task. I have decided that this week deserves a top 4. Well done to alydaman, Fierce.Needles and BUYARTPOP

Congratulations gnge, you are the winner of this task. Your design was strikingly beautiful, brilliantly conceptual and incredibly commercial. As a reward you have immunity for task 2 which means you cannot be eliminated. Your journey on LidlTerm last season came to a sudden stop which was sad to see as you could've potentially won it all. This a very strong comeback. As the winner of this task, you must eliminate three of the following four designers:

Joelings
Antheia-Ceres
prettytiara123
BlueDragon1994

gnge's decision

- Strictly due to the fact that the task was to create something “fashion-forward” yet “not too subtle”, I unfortunately choose to eliminate prettytiara123, BlueDragon1994, and Antheia-Ceres. Although it didn’t succeed, I feel there was a bit more of an attempt to create something interesting from Joelings.

Antheia-Ceres, prettytiara123 and BlueDragon1994, thank you for taking part this season. It pains me that the three of you didn't get to show more, however this is a season that is stacked with talented designers and I can't sadly continue with more than 14 players. This elimination or any other doesn't define you as a designer or a person, it just happened to be a longterm you weren't meant to win.
Task 2 is now available!
