TASK 7 I'LL RACE YA TO THE FINISH LINE

GOD KVÄLL MINA ÄLSKLINGAR! This is the seventh panel of LidlTerm S3!

We started this journey with 17 designers and now there's only 7 of them left - we're approaching the finish line.

This week, I asked the designers to create motor sport inspired fashion. I specificaly asked them to be inspired by aspects such as speed, adrenaline, race cars, race tracks, motor engines, metal, burning rubber, leather, dirt, flashing lights etc.

razzinG

I overruled you on this one without asking you, which might've been a bitchy move but I believe I did the right thing. You wanted the design to be in this walking pose (click here for reference), but as you stood still during the photoshoot I felt like the design looked way better with your model just standing still. It made me realize something: you are incredibly talented at creating statuesque designs, and statuesqueness is something that is often portrayed whenever a model is standing still - it's often acquired through the expression of commanding attention. When your model is walking, the statuesqueness isn't nearly as evident. All your winning looks from S2 and S3 have been with models standing still - and they've all been statuesque. Moving forward, I advice you to really ask yourself each time if movement is the best design strategy for your creativity.

With the risk of repeating myself, this is a very statuesque creation and I adore it. The styling, which you've struggled with at times, is on point here. It's scaled back and it allows the design to shine properly. I'm intrigued by this unexpected route you took, it's a Kill Bill-esque motor sport warrior on display, which feels like a fresh take from you. The fire pants are a bit silly and the whole point of the design could've been made without them. To top things off, I love the shoes and this design inspires me a little. Last week it felt like your design lacked zsa zsa zsu and this week you found it.

CINTHIA

Cinthia at 200 KM/H (in the wrong lane - a t.A.T.u reference close to my heart). For anyone wondering, Cinthia used her Tim Gunn advice in a specific way and told me about how she has felt stuck lately, which resulted in me personally challenging her for this task. I asked Cinthia to create a motor sport gown with a headpiece, which is a crazy request, but I believed a crazy request was the thing needed for the crazy and unapologetic designer-Cinthia to be unleashed, the side of her which helped her win S1.

I was right! I feel like I'm looking at the old Cinthia, at her highest level. I enjoy the fact that the print of the skirt is a bit of an homage to the classic black & white checkered pattern which is often related to the motor sport world - and yet the skirt has that Cinthia DNA to it. The overlayering works beautifully, there's always a risk when one takes that maximalist approach that it ends up looking overdesigned: this look almost is, but nothing in it is overwhelming or obnoxious to the eye. This is due to the smart color choices you made in relation to the layering: had every layer been of color then this really great illusion you've got going on (which is maximalist and yet forgiving to the eye) would've been lost. I also enjoy the fact that there is that motor sport vibe to it, and yet it's status as a gown isn't compromised by it - you manage to walk a very fine line with this one. I'm also a sucker for headpieces that look simple, neat and yet original, which yours comes across as. The orange gloves against the blue fabric is really fabulous as well. The blue fabric could be interpreted as flowing in the wind, it's one aspect that makes this design envoke the feeling of speed.

You look like a finish line but you're not passing one with this design, I'm afraid. If I saw this design on display irl at a boutique's window I would stop and sigh, thinking to myself that I wish that I owned the outfit. It's just that this kind of look with the jacket has been doen way too many times in the PR-longterm world, it's nearly impossible to make an original take on it nowadays. It's a damn shame because the red and black skirt that you've constructed is damn fabulous and I've never seen it before - had your top had the same innovation to it you might've been in the top this week. I also didn't really get that rhino horn at first but after you told me Chromatica was the inspiration for it I found some appreciation for it. You have never designed anything that isn't tasteful or cool, it's just that your competition is ferocious and at this point it takes very little to fall into the bottom.

sNAWL

This is perhaps the ballsiest design you've ever displayed on LidlTerm. Sure, your slightly ready-to-wear aesthetic is still present, but the risks being taken here are greater than one might think. It is very difficult to create an outfit that mainly utilizes red, orange and yellow as there's always a risk one might slander your look for being McDonald's related - you somehow avoided that trap. Your design envokes speed and the feeling of excitement more than anything else. One interesting aspect is that not only is this design closely related to classic motor sport fashion - it also has a German vibe to it, and motor sport is HUGE in Germany. I would know as I've been dragged to a motor sport event in Germany. I don't think that was your inspiration though, it's just an interesting aspect. Another risk you took was to create something a bit more ready-to-wear as it could've easily just ended up looking like motor sport inspired kids clothes at H&M, that didn't happen either. Your design looks like expensive, high-end motor sport fashion that a race car driver would wear to a red carpet or something (if they had to represent their sport and not wear a tuxedo). Lately you've been creating lots of killer tops and this week is no exception, it is by far one of my favorite things you've ever created. I think this is one design that truly represents your love and passion for this craft, there's an undescribeable spark and a joy to it.

When I first saw this design I was underwhelmed, but as time has gone by I have looked ait many times and now I've ended up liking it. It's very Diesel x Jared. You told me that this design was inspired by the underworld of street racing, with aspects such as danger & risk being factors you wanted to incorporate into your design. I believe I would've come to that conclussion myself - which is a good thing as that means your work speaks for itself. The top has a certain aura to it that is hard to explain - it's like a mixture of adrenaline with a crash. It's a beautiful mess in other words. I find that the black headband looks fantastic in relation to the leather jacket: for most of this season you've been pretty good at accessorizing. The dirty, almost metallic looking shorts with the dirty bots in combination with the pose is really neat as well and it gives the items a slightly fresher/more interesting rendition. I think the one negative critique I have to give you is that this look, compared to the others this week, falls slightly short regarding innovation. You had a great inspiration and it shows you were passionate in your design process, but I still feel like you didn't execute the concept to its full potential.

This is a racing overall that does the task justice, it has a cool and cold feeling to it, reminds me of antifreeze even (google it for those of you who don't know what that is). I absolutely love that someone chose to do a laying down look for this season, it's quite unusual in PR longterms and it's great to see you shake things up a bit. I absolutely adore the intricate blue gloves and I believe you were very smart in choosing to display those graphics on the chest, as they do a wonderful job at portraying speed or flashing lights even. Time for some tough love, Lee. You won the first task which automatically made you the one to beat, and more or less every look that you have presented in each panel have had some form of innovation to them which is something that will do wonders for you if you end up as a finalist. You haven't been in the top since week 1 and I've struggled to figure out why until recently. A lot of your work is innovative and displays your hard work as well as your talent, but if you want to make it as a finalist you have to find a slightly more complex inspiration process. Take this submission for example: the task was to create a motor sport look and you made a racing overall, nothing wrong with that, but it's almost too on the nose. Perhaps it would've done you well to find inspiration in an oil slick or the composition of a motor or the leather seats of a sports car. I know that you have it in you to find more complex inspiration, just look at your week 1 & 2 looks - they're divine and insanely inspired pieces!

UHU

I laughed when I saw this because there's a grain of comedy to this - you've utilized a train costume to create a fashion-forward look. Despite it being funny I think you pulled it off. Sure, the dress is very cooky and not everyone's cup of tea, I'd get that. Even I would've tweaked it slightly, I would've for example avoided using turquoise and neon green to keep it from being too playful and almost childish. There is still so much about this that I love. One of my favorite design elements in Habbo of all time is the fishnets, it's super easy to fall into the trap of utilizing fishnet and having it look tacky but I find that you managed to make it look cool and editorial even. The red accessories are to die: you don't need all that clutter in the middle. I believe you have really found yourself as a designer and ultimately a creator lately, but I must still remind you that the editing process and taking a step back to access your work remains critical. I enjoy that there's a mechanical feeling to the middle part and overall this is pretty great - like I've said so many times, there's never a dull moment from you which is worth more than gold no matter what you do in life.

verdict

I was so excited to do this task - and you guys made it an exciting panel! Thank you to all 7 of you, I keep saying it but it bears repeating - I'm so grateful for all of you.

Well done to Snawl and Razzing for making it to the top, I find that you both showed a developed understanding of finding your own unique inspiration and applying it to the task - don't let go of that.

Congratulations Cinthia, this week you reminded everyone that you are a creator who is on fire once you find your own zone. You managed to step outside of your head for this once, don't go back to an anxious design process - design like you know you're gonna win. Sometimes a hint of delusion does wonders for the creative process. As a reward for winning this task, you will have immunity for next panel.

As so many times, the bottom doesn't consist of bad outfits, it rather consists of the two designers who happened to get the lowest ranking - two completely different things. The bottom two consists of:

- BUYARTPOP
- Fierce.Needles

cinthia's decision

- Okay! I love them both and i think they’re both great designers BUT because we’re getting to the end, I’d like to eliminate competition so I’d choose BUYARTPOP. Let’s be honest, his outfits are too fucking great, I’m scared

BUYARTPOP - your journey on LidlTerm S3 ends here. I nagged you to be on S1 and S2 because I knew you would be a great contestant, so it was an absolute privilege to have you on this season. You did not turn out to be a great contestant, you turned out to be fantastic. I have so much love for the creativity in you - not just the Habbo design part. Thank you so very much for taking part this season, I love you in my own special way.
