TASK 6 LET ARBER DO THINGS TO YOUR FACE

Hello designers and welcome to the sixth panel of LidlTerm S3!
This week, philantrophist, sadist and wet cement eater icearbr is collaborating with the top 8 designers. He is an amazing creator and it is a privilege to have him involved! icearbr has created four custom make-up looks from scratch, and each designer was tasked with creating an outfit that matches with the make-up that they were provided. I specifically asked for a form of synergy to be present between the make-up and the outfit.

Filip:
For as long as I can remember you’ve had this love for performance art apparel, but you’ve also had an interest in the more conventional/typical world of fashion. I believe this outfit is you showing that you’ve found an equilibrium between the two sides. This whole look comes across as something a rockstar would wear to perform at a popular music festival or perhaps the VMA’s - but it’s not costumey, even though there’s flair and drama to it, it’s fashion in my eyes. For a long time you’ve had this 60’s MOD feeling to most of your designs: this one does too, but it also represents a new side of you: the Harry who has become a little bit of a rocker in his design approach. I love that it looks like two outfits were sewn into one here, a true Frankenstein-design. Some might say the chef’s hat is a bit too out of place but I appreciate the oddness: it adds to the whole dirty vibe. In fact: all of the orange parts looks dirty, which ties in with the grimy vibe of the make-up. My two favorite aspects are that there’s three blue earrings (one near the shoes) and the black & white mini-dress, it’s cute yet edgy at the same time!? Overall this design is the cousin of your Euphoria-part 2 design from Season 1 and both designs are fantastic.
Arber:
Girl, you dropped an earring. I love that we can see Ratatouille the rat peeking from the hat.

I haven't got a clue how you made that top - is it a new item or something? It's gorgeous and one of the best designs I've seen in a long time. I can also imagine it would be difficult to find a bottom piece to match the top with, the pear-green and black striped pants match incredibly well. The cuffs on the top are to die for. I love what you created but the harsh truth is that I actually prefer the whole ensemble without the make-up - it's not that it's a mismatch but rather that the make-up doesn't really do anything for the look. It's not your fault really - sometimes great stuff doesn't match with other great stuff. You told me that your intention was to design something that has both darkness and light to it, which you definitely achieved. The overall effect is that your design comes across as mischievous and it all looks a bit toxic - in a fabulous way that is. I appreciate that the heels are orange and that they therefore stand on their own - they're not matchy matchy or applied as a second thought. That's one strength you have as a designer, you don't rush your concepts and you think about every aspect. Do I believe the make-up would've worked better had the design been all in black and gray? Not really. I could be wrong but I feel like this design was slightly inspired by Asian nature - am I wrong? All in all I think you're coming from a very interesting place in your design approach lately and I want to see more.
Arber:
Omg it's the Mom from Monsters inc University. That thumb looks busted, it's giving me Megan Fox Toe Thumb (let's cancel Arber for body shaming Brad's model)

The styling on this one - oh my god - I love it. The hair, the headband, the glove and the white heel - there's nothing revolutionary on display but that's not necessary, to me the styling is simple yet perfect. The pose with the head resting on the shoulder sells the whole look as well - you have a background in professional photography and it shows that you think about these subtle aspects that can elevate a design. Your submission this week is nothing complex, it's a dress that is a bit simple and very to the point - and yet I don't want to stop looking at it. That is the magic of good design: you don't have to reinvent the wheel all the time. I will say that I think the color scheme you chose is a bit on the nose: there are more ways to match a make-up other than to mimic the colors. I'm sure you know that, I just find that you could've utilized softer and more earthy colors which would've fulfilled the whole romantic concept you've got going on - and it would've made sense with the headband and the heels. You told me Ukrainian culture was an inspiration for you in relation to the make-up which I find really great and the inspiration is clear - not just because it's a blue and yellow dress but rather due to other choices you made. A lot of Ukrainian fashion is heavily geared towards these Goddess-like silhouettes and a lot of romanticism and that is what you achieved.
Arber:
This is what happens when Ikea opens a shop in Naruto and you get Ikea sponsored ninjas. Surprisingly capitalistic.

Dry Ice
Filip:
I like that it looks like a bird somehow
Arber: a fat bird
Something really brilliant about this is that your make-up is called Dry Ice and it has this cold, Scandinavian look to it - and you combined it with cold looking metallic shoes and a metallic hemline. One type of cold with another type of cold, that's fierce - no pun intended. I love that there's a lot of graphical elements to the look, they're almost doing a dance with each other. There's the blue and yellow scales with an electric feeling to them, the make-up and the print on the backpack. I've never really seen anyoen create a design with that backpack that shines and I believe you're the first one to truly bring out it's full potential in a longterm setting. It's interesting that there's a sporty vibe to the design, but at the same time there's also a bit of an elegance present - which is a rare combination. Last week was a big misstep for you and I want you to apply this approach to design that you've just used in every task as you move forward.
Arber:
I mean it's fat and shapeless, but I love that it is fat and ashapeless. The make-up goes well with the quasi white people fake tribal aesthetic.

Filip:
I shouldn't judge you harsher because I'm familiar with your past work, but you can do much better than this. It's not just that this exact look has been done before several times in other longterms - it just lacks soul. You're one of the most soulful designers I know of - why have you been so insecure about your design process lately? I think panel 4 showcased you at your best with a new aesthetic, but the last two looks have just shown you being nervous. Go back and look at your winning collection, even when the presure was on, every look was full of ''I'm Cinthia, if you don't love it then fuck you!''. That's what I want all the time, because this design just feels like you're playing it way too safe. I will say that I enjoy the different shades of red and that the collar is interesting. If you stay next week, you have to make yourself believe that you're gonna go all the way - because if you don't you wont.
Arber:
Just because the makeup has that specific mouth shape doesn't mean you had to show us the image of a penis aiming for it

Filip:
When you submitted this, without the make-up on your model, I looked at it and thought to myself: ''really?'' - and yet somehow it all works. I adore that there is a flow from the make-up mask to the golden shoulder pad and down to the blue details at the hip. If you can create a kind of natural flow in your design, you know you've got something good going on. There's a bit of a naughty gay fetish aura to your design - perhaps that's a bit much to hear and I'm sorry if you take offense to that but it's a bedazzled sailor jacket with a latex (or leather?) skirt along with a make-up that looks like an artsy glory hole. I love it! I admire that you managed to pair such a busy top with a bottom that is a bit more subtle and yet interesting (wow did I just make another gay sex reference). It's actually amazing how little your design has to do with the make-up and yet the two are so great once combined. I'm not sure what else there is to say, I believe you had a fully developed concept and that you made it justice with your execution - keep going like this and you'll probably end up as a finalist.

Filip:
I believe you had the most maximalist make-up, so your approach should've perhaps been slightly less maximalist. There are just too many details to look at. Your design comes across as slightly overdesigned: there is a bow, suspenders, a belt, knee cut-outs and shoes with peekaboos - which might not sound like much but in combination with the busy make-up it is. Without the make-up I wouldn't have minded. I'm being tough on you because at this point I have to split hairs, you guys are collectively killing it. That's the only negative critique I have for you, because I really like this outfit in itself. There is this odd and unexpected combination of country/boho-chic and urban streetwear - it works surprisingly well and it shows that you take risks. Despite the overdesigning I think it all worked out. One might think I'm contradicting myself when I say this but I don't think I am: the pants with the exposed knee combined with the open-toed shoe is pretty great: the bottom of the design has this ease and coolness to it. I also adore the transition from warm colors to cold colors. The most important aspect of a longterm participation is to not lose yourself and your aesthetic as a designer and I'm pleased to see that your defined style still stands in week 6.

Filip:
The good: I am crazy about the Y2K vibes of this, you look like a flamboyant new member of Backstreet Boys about to shoot a music video. For some reason I hear Britney's ''Born To Make You Happy'' as I look at this. I love that the jacket looks like it's having an identity crisis (I mean that as a compliment) - it's almost as if two jackets melted into one. I'd say it's avant garde even. I wasn't so sure about the bag at first but now I think it looks really cool, and successfully incorporating bags into PR looks is a difficult thing. The two-colored pant is also really chic. It's a sexy look and I believe my favorite detail is that the left arm looks so restricted within the jacket while the other arm has broken free.
The bad: last year, your make-up look was the absolute best look of the entire season, therefore it was difficult to not have high expectations regarding you in relation to this task. Your season 2 look was a master class in how to create synergy between make-up and outfit, in this instance I feel like the synergy isn't as strong as it could be: the outfit doesn't need the make-up - the make-up rather stands as an appropriate aspect and not a necessary addition. I'm being tough on you, I know that, but that's just because I know what you're capable of.
verdict
This is my favorite task of all time, and for a good reason: there's always magic happening when custom make-up meets design in a collaboration between two creators. This panel was such a treat, thank you all for once again creating such a charming panel.
I felt like I could put 6 looks in the top this week but I'll only do a top 3. Well done to Fierce.Needles and BUYARTPOP for making it to the top - you two created such beautiful creations, you should both be proud.
Congratulations Uhu, you are the winner of this task. It was very close within the top 3 regarding who would get the win, ultimately you are given it due to the high quantity as well as the high quality of unique design work that you presented this week. As a reward, you have immunity at the next panel, which means that you cannot be eliminated.
At this point, there isn't really any bottom worthy looks, only designers that happened to not get the highest rankings. A rank does not equal a score. The designers with the lowest rankings this week are:
- LC22 (6th)
- Razzing (7th, immunity)
- Cinthia (8th)
uhu's decision
- Okay ... both of the submissions in the bottom two this week are instantly eye catching, and both extremely cool, both runway ready, both a work of art. Probably the best bottom two of the season so far. Actually no, both of these are the best bottom two so far, 100%. Anyway - the designer that I would save (who I personally thought took that extra edgy, Avant Garde vibe and ran with the makeup given) .. would be Cinthia. Meaning I do think LC22 fell a little shorter. Apologizes if I was the one to make this decision.
LC22, unfortunately you have been eliminated this week. I actually got a tear in my eye when I found out. The passion that you have shown and the love that you have given us - you are genuinely a beautiful soul and I am your biggest fan. This just wasn't your week and this elimination doesn't define you. What does define you is your insane creativity and your loving approach to life. I am so deeply grateful to have gotten to know you this longterm. From the bottom of my heart, thank you. You and I have shared our creative work in private and you've supported my journey in irl sewing, I seriously mean what I'm about to say: if you ever want me to sew you something I'll do it and ship it to you for free. I know I can speak for all of us: we love you.
