божий вечір and welcome to the fourth panel!

task 4
eurovision x lidlterm part 2

In 2021, during the second season of LidlTerm, we had a Eurovision-themed task and it made for one of my favorite panels ever. The results were exciting, diverse and it felt like each designer reached a new level that week (click here to see the panel I'm refering to). I believed that once again, we could make that magic happen.

This week, the designers got to choose froom 4 different performances from the Eurovision Song Contest in order to design an outfit inspired by their chosen performance. The inspiration from the chosen video could be anything: visuals, lyrics, sound, energy, dancing, moves, fashion; you name it.

NOTE: I am aware of the fact that the EBU might have geoblocked the videos, if you can't access them below then please click this link to access the Dropbox folder containing all 4 videos.

Let's start the show!

1. sweden - loreen - tattoo

Filip

You came into the PR scene with an aesthetic and a point of view that is very grounded in your own personal taste and interets. As I've seen you grow over the year + months that I've known you, I find that you've constantly been trying to balance new inspirations and sides of you with your original taste in fashion. This look perfectly exemplifies the journey you've made: there's this rock girl in here who has a love for the mysterious and the extravagant, but there's also a slightly sharper and edgier persona on display. This is an incredible look, Elysse. You told me your inspiration was the moment everything gets blue and Loreen pours her heart out, which your look makes clear for anyone who sees it and knows the performance. I adore the way a part of the outfit looks like a cage that your model didn't just break out off but it also wearing and owning it. It's abstract to the point where there's still a relatable thread throughout the whole design. The slight touch of bronze does wonders for the blue, fresh palette and gives it a greater value. The hat is a very enjoyable addition as well. This whole design has that vulnerable, mystical and loving quality to it that Tattoo is all about.

harry

Urm. Well welcome to the competition Elysse! My god haven't you done yourself proud this week. The detailing you have created evokes such a similar feeling as to when I saw Tattoo for the first time. The hidden details, the glitches constructed through retros, just every single choice on your avatar, wow. Retro styling can go downhill & too much very quickly, but not here. Bravo.

Filip

I enjoy the play on burning, passionate intensity mixed with subtlety. It's like this whole look has tiny explosions here and there. The visual connection to the performance of Tattoo  isn't strong, then again that wasn't necessarily the point of the task: you interpreted Tattoo  in your very own way and I appreciate that. There is still a red thread in relation to the song's message and overall aura. I believe this outfit's strength's are strangely also it's weakness: the details are fantastic, but the black dress as a base is just a little dull. I've gone that route many times and learned the hard way: an outfit can't be 100% about cool details, there also has to be a strong base. The only thing needed was to choose a different color, maybe a leather brown? The skirt (or the bottom of the dress) looks both shredded and yet like it's almost pulsating with an intense energy. Week after week you come up with really great ideas, unique even. Your challenge remains to take more risks in terms of the base.

harry

Detailing!! You have detailing down this week!, All the red texturing is marvelously done :) - A+ for styling. Not many people make that hair look fashionable, but you did, actually thats the same for alot of the items you picked this week. Nice job!, if anything I think you could have actually represented the performance and video a little bit more, maybe you strayed a tiny bit from the original aesthetic.

BUYARTPOP

Filip

This is interesting. It has that 70's ugly-chic feeling to it. At the same time I so rarely get to see something like this in longterms or shortterms. It's a look that shows skin and yet it's purpose isn't to be sexy. The bulky pants, the brown color palette and the sandals feels raw, earthy and a step away from this overstimulated TikTok-era of pop culture and fashion that we live in today, which is why I love it. It is in it's own area, it's a little hard to explain. Some might call this a shameless play on Loreen's outfiit, but I don't really see a problem with it. You took the original concept of the look and the aesthetic that Loreen displays in the video and you present it through the BUYARTPOP filter, I was crossing my fingers someone would do an homage to Loreen's outfit. You are a designer with perhaps the most defined and established aesthetic of the entire cast, to throw it away would be foolish. The challenge for you is to sometimes change to a higher gear when the task asks for it, like the next one for example. We've seen you find the perfect formula before (task 2).

harry

Hmmmm! You have my mind wondering this week, whether or not you could have done more, especially for a visionary like Loreens performance. The fabric that you have chosen and that is shown is lovely, it looks SO comfy, just maybe wanted a little more, I feel you have a good start with what you have though, kinda like a template. I LOVE the shoe choice for them pants.

Filip

I wasn't expecting a high-end 1920's/1930's art deco kind of look, and on paper it's a terrible idea in relation to Tattoo, yet the result is marvelous. I believe it's because you took this concept of old school glam and gave it a remix: you incorporated several earthy, almost rugged textures. I'm not implying your model looks naked, but I believe that going with a partially skin-colored color palette, it allowed for the look to come across as vulnerable and exposed, which is an aspect that perfectly relates to Tattoo. I believe you had a rough start to this season and now you're starting to find the formula for going all the way: you show that you have a clear idea of who you are as a designer while you also try to do things that are a bit new to you. There is still growth to do and perhaps you could be a bit more experimental with the silhouette, however next week is the perfect opportunity for you regarding that. The top, along with the gloves and the belt and the necklace, is just one of those compositions that you can stare at for minutes.

harry

This is pretty recognisable for the chosen video! - I think it is clear that it lacks alot this week. Especially when everyone else is so, on the ball. I love the vibe and the aesthetic you give off! Everything you chose this week was perfect, it just lacks a little oomph, a little detail, a little styling! - I just wanna see more styling! Just like last week! You hit it out of the park.

2. italy - diodato - fai rumore

cinthia

Filip

The second I saw this I just got it. There is a moment in the performance of Fai Rumore in which Diodato's many dancers are lifting him up and some heavenly instrumentals are playing: this design is that moment, it almost looks like your model is laying down and is being lifted up by something. This might be the first time I ever see that hair in a Project Runway-longterm setting, it was a hairstyle that was super trendy on Habbo in 2007-2008 and then everybody avoided it like the plague. It's rugged nature is absolutely perfect to the crazy feather coat you're presenting here. I am a very liberal person and I define myself as a feminist: I believe a ton of men on this planet has some strange issue with the beautiful nature-phenomenon of women having their periods and I more than welcome that aspect of nature to be involved in fashion. Having said that, I struggle to understand how a design that looks like your model is having their period relates to Fai Rumore.  I suppose there is an argument to be made about how the song is about pain and bleeding love. Overall, you never fail to present something that grabs your attention and I'd hate to see you stop.

harry

You portrayed the feeling to this video quite nicely! At first the performance feels rigid (in a good way) and quite still, and you have represented that very well. I'm not too sure on the dino pants, as that is literally alls I see and it kind of takes away from the strong, powerful design you have going on around you! Perfect hair choice this week, I love the way it merges into the black and creates an asymmetry down your face - it keeps the whole thing from feeling TOO stiff. Nice job overall! Just not a fan of the bottoms.

herbymainsted

Herby is not competing this week due to a personal crisis. Please send some love his way!

3. serbia - konstrakta - in corpore sano

peyton125

Filip

At first I didn't think this look made the abstract and bizarre nature of the performance justice, however now I see it for what it is. It looks like infected urban streetwear pieces. The top is quite immaculate, you can see which items you've used but together they just work perfectly together and it's interesting to see a top piece that is both so short and to the point while at the same time there is volume to it. I'm going back and forth on the choice between the black panty. On one hand it's brilliant to choose something so minimalistic and, in the context of the PR scene, unusual as it is both a bold move while it also makes the top shine even brighter as a piece on its own. On the other hand, you're almost left wishing for a bottom piece that is as great as the top. I want to make a point about the overall concept in relation to the shoes: your bacteria concept is a bit too literal and borderline Cozzie Change material. In PR, things have to be a bit more fashion-forward and smart when presenting such an idea. The shoes are a perfect example of how to do such an idea right: it portrays this bacteria idea of yours without it being either too on the nose or too obscure.

harry

I think you tried to do TOO much this week! Let me start of by mentioning how well that scarf meshes into that top, and how well that top meshes into them mechanical arm thingies!! I love that alot, and paired with the black pants and boots works really well. I think what could have elevated it even more is actually removing that tail, it would have made the whole thing feel less, forced. On the fence about this specific face accessory! But I do think you benefited from having a unique head accessory this week.

MOTORMICKEYNEW

Filip

This design doesn't relate to the visual elements of the video, at least according to me. I rather find that the outfit plays on the sound of the song as well as traditional Balkan fashion: it's this modest, romantic and almost heartbleeding aesthetic (Arber might have a different take on classic Balkan fashion). Not that I'm implying most Balkan women wears a bloody cat around their neck. This look features a traditional silhouette with a twist of modern, cozy fashion and a touch of absurdity, which I find was a necessary thing to include in relation to the choice of In Corpore Sano. There isn't much to say about this really, it's a very beautiful skirt-and-top combination and I'd even call it one of those looks in which the model wears their heart on their sleeve, it feels exposed. I also love the one naked shoulder and the blue heels.

harry

I actually think you did a good job at representing the music itself this week, and the vibe of the song. Where most people went visual. An absolutely gorgeous outfit this week, the construction is out of this world. Please keep this up!

Filip

This outfit is like a riddle: where do I begin to look? Where do I stop looking? What is it trying to tell me? It is laughing at me and I am trying to figure it all out. This feeling that you envoke is hilariously perfect: Konstrakta's performance is supposed to be a head-scratcher while at the same time it comments on issues of modern western life. One message of the song is that the west is obsessed with certain images of a healthy and appealing lifestyle while our minds are sick. I applaud the way you achieved something so crazy as to have an outfit that looks like it's unhealthily clean, like it has an odor of  nauseatingly strong cleaning products. One fantastic thing you created is the skirt: it's this black, almost raver-style skirt that only exists to 80%, the other 20% is eaten up by this almost metallic texture. For long I've been of the opinion that the PR communtiy over-accessorizes and often adds earrings and hats and what not to a look that doesn't need it. You are the exception: I'm dying to see you utilize an earring.

harry

I can actually imagine one of the dancers/models wearing this in the performance, emphasis on the dancers and not the main event. But I think that's what I like about it, it's not too loud, it's wearable, clean, and does a good job at representing your chosen performance. Please style your head though :D!

4. finland - käärijä - cha cha cha

cassandra.goth

Filip

You had a very literal approach to the task and Käärijäs' performance, especially in relation to the jacket and the shoes. Having said that, sometimes doing the obvious or the literal thing is the best way to go: not always do you have to reinvent the wheel in order to succeed. Käärijä's green bolero-jacket is an iconic fashion piece and I believe you're doing it justice here by showing it through the fashion perspective of Cassandra.Goth. The addition of a matching handbag is hilarious and yet an idea I bet Käärijä wishes he thought of, besides it being funny it also elevates the look and gives it a little more oomph. The metallic chain along with the matching earring goes very well with the type of music that is Cha Cha Cha and it works as a contrast against the black and the intense lime green. It's campy fashion done really well. Sure, you would've benefitted from having a more experimental silhouette this week but still, this is a really great loook and I think it shows you had fun with the creative process. Whatever you did differently this time is the right way to go moving forward.

harry

You understood this task completely, you chose to take it into the mainstream route and understood what you had to do to create your vision. This is incredibly hot and fashionable. Your styling is on point, the best you have shown us this competition, you are definitely listening and taking into account on what you can do to elevate your designs! It's so camp, the little detail of the handbag tops it off for me. Everything is honestly so perfect, I cannot fault one thing that you have chosen. Extremely well-done this week, please give yourself a well-earnt pat on the back!!

nicrobbo95

Filip

You told me you struggled this week and it shows. Which makes it both strange and funny that this look is infused with an innovative element: the color streaks on the jacket. Insanely fabulous. Let's discuss your ongoing journey here: the looks that you've been most pleased with in this competition has been looks that are in your comfort zone, and now that you were forced to leave it (as you didn't really love any of the videos) you handed in a look that has issues, but also that one ingredient we've been missing from you: unexpectedness. Even if this week was a bit painful for you, it shows that leaving your comfort zone moving forward is the way to go if you want to be the winner of the season. The question isn't whether you have it in you, but rather if you dare to get raw with your own creative process. Back to the look: you made the jacket unique through a couple of smart choices, yet I'm just so bored with the classic black-and-neon-color concept. That one pink detail to one of the shoes (and not the other) is so charming. Overall, you did alright.

harry

The more I keep looking at your outfit the more details I begin to notice!! Honestly I do not know how you created the whole thing, especially around the jacket / arm area. I love the route you took your outfit, it still fits the song & performance, whilst being different. It's very edgy. The whole thing does seem a little pushed though, like a stiffness to it, maybe the amount of black could've been changed to let these neon streaks you have shine!? A little more fun within the design would have been nice. But either way, a really nice take on this task.

fierce.needles

Filip

You always stay true to who you are and it's interesting to see the Käärijä aesthetic from your more streamline and scaled back point of view. You're a designer who brings drama and creates an impact through subtle means and methods, while Käärijä and his team is more in-your-face and direct in their approach compared to your creative process. This comes across as a chic from-business-to-party-event-I-don't-have-time-to-go-home-and-change kind of look, it's an interesting portrayal. I believe Käärijä and Cha Cha Cha is a lot about letting go and getting a little ugly with it (in a fun, sexy way) and I can't help but to feel like this look is a tad constrained and shy almost: in a way I wish your garment had been run over by a car a couple of times, it's just a little too neat and polished for what is trying to be achieved here. Still, I love that you tied in the colors of the dancers with the now iconic green and black that is related to Käärijä's look, and the backpiece is a really interesting creation which elevates everything.

harry

This is camp- kind of! This is fashionable- kind of! I actually don't know what this is.. which I guess fits your chosen video! You always manage to hit the ball out of the park with unusual concepts, and unusual ways of meshing things together, unfortunetly for me I think you hit the ball a little to the left this week. Maybe its the styling choices, but something is a little off key. A pleasant submission.

antheia-ceres

Filip

Fantastic. You found a way to take the madness that is Cha Cha Cha and tame it to fit the Antheia-aesthetic. Käärijä's huge green bolero-jacket is very in-your-face and interestingly, you present a drastically more subtle take on it. My favorite aspect of this look is probably the pink top: it looks like you stripped one of those neon light displays from a wall and incorporated it into your outfit. I've seen that combination of pants and shoes before and I have never really loved it until now, this is the one perfect way to display that idea. The pants both relate to Käärijä's original pants while it also looks like the pants were infused with the charm of the green bolero-jacket. All in all, this look is almost vibrating with energy and it's the perfect look for a performer: you know you're in for a good time by looking at this. I'm guessing it was deliberate, but the way the black bolero you constructed merges with the hair and makes it even more special is highly avant garde. Bravo!!!

harrY

You ooze confidence this week! Which is exactly what your chosen performance asked for. Your submission is arrogant, dominant and does not take no for an answer! & I love that! You haven't done any complicated design this week, but that is what makes everything you have done shine and speak for itself. Your styling is awesome! Maybe the whole thing is a tad straight forward, but good-job.

12 (+1) designers
3 will receive keys

It's always tough only getting to hand out keys to 3 designers each week. I'd like to remind all of you that anything can still happen. Like I previously stated, this competitive format is based of the tv-show RPDR: All Stars season 7, in which two of three finalists had the least keys until the semi-final, which made them finalists. It ain't over until the fat lady Lidl-Wayne sings.

In 3rd place
motormickeyOLD - congratulations, you've received 1 key

In 2nd place
Cassandra.Goth - congratulations, you've received 1 key

The winner of this task
LC22

This week you obliterated your competition and created one of the best music-themed PR creations I've ever seen. You showed us the LC22-aesthetic that we've all fallen in love with, mixed with the artistic elements of Tattoo. We previously talked about you leaving your comfort zone: well, it's far behind you by this point. You have received 2 keys. Congratulations
