1 - The cranberries - zombie

Welcome to the fourth panel of LidlTerm season 1! This week we have a very special guest judge, the mother/father of longterms and PR-icon Snawl aka Brad. As always my co-judge, socialism enemy and inventor of the British girl group aesthetic, Alex is here.

This week the designers had to design an outfit inspried by one of three European music videos, the criteria was that the outfit needed a strong connection to the music video and that each designer embraced the feeling they got from the song.

FILIP'S CRITIQUES

Although it is a beautiful print and the sleeve detail is fabulous, it has been done before, a lot. I don’t think the nude illusion works either, it is really distracting and unflattering actually. I like that with the shade of green you chose you managed to give both the belt and the shoes a glossy effect. The styling is problematic, the hair makes this design look more drab than it actually is. You submitted a look before this, while that one wouldn’t have made the top, it was much better than this and represented your technical skills as a designer, this does not. I at least enjoy how you extended the sleeve with the scarf and that you took a risk with this look, even though it did not pay off.

brad'S CRITIQUES

Ew, your hand looks like it was run over by a train. Your use of the floral patterns in the kimono clothes to convey the ceremonial scene in the music video is ingenious, I love it. I also love the linear shape of the outfit. It is sturdy, bleak and almost emotionless, which is a common interpretation of the video. The overall colour palette is derivative without being boring, so good job. My main critique with this outfit is that you’re using the kimono dress with the matching kimono top it came with, so there isn’t a lot of innovation going on with your choice of fabric. But your sideways pose and interesting method of working it into the task is good enough to keep me happy. Nice work, Lee.

alex'S CRITIQUES

That sleeve detail will always be gorgeous with this pose but I feel you could have executed the nude illusion better. Other than that I do like this, the dark green is gorg and I love the attitude that the boots and the hair give. Very cool and edgy take on this kind of look but there's not a lot more to it. While it's a good look it just gets outshone by most of the other looks this week that went a lot further. Good job though!

FILIP'S CRITIQUES

I don’t know what to say, you crashed and burned this week. This is so undeveloped, so uninspiring and so PR 2011. I am so happy someone did a take on the golden visuals that is in the music video and I think the scarf and the hair looks fierce, sadly I just can’t let you continue this season with a dress. I know you personally went through a busy, perhaps tough week so I’m not offended or anything, it’s really unfortunate considering the fact that you have been in the top two out of three times prior to this challenge.

brad'S CRITIQUES

This is a very surface-level interpretation of the task, and I think you could have harvested a lot more detail if you really wanted to. I like the inspiration, and there are a few clothing items I can understand as relevant to the video, but overall I’m just wanting more. I want something that conveys the video and separates it from being just another run-of-the-mill gold outfit. The scarf accessory clashes with the rest of the outfit because of the difference in fabric & flow. For me, everything looks too neat and put-together to have anything related to the video, honestly. I’m sure you tried hard, but I get the impression that this was rushed. Sorry.

alex'S CRITIQUES

This hair and makeup is so stunning that it almost makes up for the atrocious outfit. Almost girl. I see your inspiration but this just doesn't work. Very clunky and clashes with itself, no clear vision or direction for the final look. I see you were trying to create some interesting textures but we need more at this stage than a semi experimental look. If you're going to go with the monochromatic look there needs to be a groundbreaking shape or silhouette to it and this isn't that

FILIP'S CRITIQUES

The skirt, the bloody details, the pattern, the red top sleeve detail - it is all a stunning composition. I feel like you didn’t just connect with the visuals of the music video but also with the feeling the song evokes. The jacket conflicts me, on one hand I think the silhouette and the texture is sharp, on the other hand I really don’t like when there is a lot of that shade of gray. All in all this is a strong look from you.

brad'S CRITIQUES

This is a brilliantly crafted outfit that perfectly balances shades and colour. Not only do I see the style of the band members conveyed, but I also get that early ‘90s first blossom of grunge aesthetic as well. Normally I hate it when earrings duplicate the outfit’s colour but here I really enjoy it, and I can’t quite explain why. My only complaint is your decision to pose diagonally - I don’t see how it is purposeful in this outfit. Besides that, this is one of my top 3 favourites of the week. Splendid work, Cinthia!

alex'S CRITIQUES

Gorgeousssss! Love this one a lot. I have no idea how you did this so it makes it even more impressive to me. Love the red earring into the red shoulder which bleeds down into the Grey's and blacks. Very sexy and mysterious and feels fresh and exciting to look at. Hair was chosen perfectly. Love all the textures too. An exciting look well done!

FILIP'S CRITIQUES

When you submitted this at first I hated it, yet it has grown on me a lot. I find the pink shoes a bit unsuitable, you showed me a design prior to this in which they looked gorgeous, in this case they kind of take away from the serious, dramatic feeling of the song. The gold composition is lovely, you took items and an overall silhouette which has been done a million times and made it your very own, which is what saves you this week. The light gray works beautifully against the gold, although I kind of wish you had dared to make the trim another color than gold/orange. Last week we saw innovation from you, next week I want to see you take more risks.

brad'S CRITIQUES

I was hoping someone would reference the cherubs. The outfit itself isn’t a technical marvel, but the magic comes from your direction of pose, as well as adding motion. Your hand is blocking the ugliest part of that belt which is very crafty. Adding motion to the norm skirt really augments the fabric and adds a new layer of appreciation to it. My main critique would be that you’re using clothing & accessories that have always been traditionally paired together – I acknowledge that you’re upcycling them, but you’re not showing me anything all that new. Still a really cool outfit. Nice work.

alex'S CRITIQUES

I LOVE IT. I think out of all of the designs this one is the most easily identifiable with its video. Loveeee how it flows down and you can feel the movement of it. Colours are chosen perfectly so it doesn't feel too overpowering. Love the heel colour you expert. I just love the 20s feel too so I find this outfit really appealing and think you executed the task perfectly this week. Are you competing without HC babe?

FILIP'S CRITIQUES

I was worried no one would do Euphoria justice, partly because it is my favorite song of all time so to create a design which lives up to that wasn’t going to be easy. This design conveys the magic, the power and the ecstatic energy which is Euphoria. The silhouette or composition isn’t anything groundbreaking, what makes this look succesful is the brilliant mixture or textures, prints and colors. The movement adds a slightly new meaning to the skirt as well. Brilliant Herby!

brad'S CRITIQUES

I’m sorry Zechariah but I abhor this outfit. “She’s standing in a field of green so I made a green outfit!” I see no correlation to the video. Not in the textures, not in the shape, nothing. The outfit itself has some interesting patterns to it, but I find it to be overloaded with detail. The backpack straps I feel are completely unnecessary, and I think you were screwed from the start when you committed yourself to designing around that horrid jacket. In the video, the clothes (and grass!) are free-flowing, wavy, graciously being lead by the wind. And you designed the mirror opposite: stiff as a board. I like your shoes, though.

alex'S CRITIQUES

picks up the phone to LidlCorp okay this is the serve. Mega fashion in my opinion. I am so impressed by all the layering and detailing and yet you managed to make it look streamlined and sleek and avoid it looking overcrowded for the sake of it. Something very elevated about this. Well done you nailed it, I'm very impressed. The use of the movement to warp the skirt is genius.

FILIP'S CRITIQUES

The big black skirt is an amazing addition to the design, it does a good job at representing the dark underlying tone of Euphoria. Euphoria features a visual symphony of blues and purples and I am so grateful you incorporated some of that, the blue textures really connects with the romantic nature aspect of the music video and the fact that you’ve used several textures which are all different is really pleasing to the eye. There is something melancholic in a very beautiful way about your composition. The orange scarf adds volume and drama and is a statement about how you incorporated your own feelings towards the song and the music video. When I look at this outfit I am reminded of that feeling in my chest the first time I heard the song. You created a stunning avant garde piece, hats off to you Harry!

brad'S CRITIQUES

This is my favourite of the Euphoria submissions. Nobody nailed the consistency better than you. This outfit is jam-packed with references to the video, from the black dress to the free-flowing sporadic clothing. I can close my eyes and effortlessly see this outfit among the tall grass in the video, swaying in the wind. Your decision to add orange may be peculiar to some, but I thoroughly enjoy it and find it necessary to add your own idiosyncrasies to impromptu tasks like so. This is in my top 3 for sure, excellent work Harri.

alex'S CRITIQUES

Very impressive!! Out of everyone this week you had the balls to deliver the most elaborate and different silhouette and shape with your look. Now let's not pretend you haven't used that upper half before in Snawl's long-term but you did change around the colours and the addition of the dress and long scarf does change the look completely so I am still very much a fan of this. Love the blue with the clay colour and then black. Great details. Very good work just try and keep it original every week.

FILIP'S CRITIQUES

I think you didn’t go overboard with the accessories and I appreciate that, the styling with the hair and the shoes is appropriate. What I like about this outfit is the belt, the beautiful color palette and the left sleeve which merges with the boa. Overall I think this isn’t one of the stronger outfits this week, it’s just not very exciting to look at and I think you didn’t reach the full potential that this concept has. I think this outfit represents your good eye for styling and working with colors, but an insecurity in taking a risk. It’s a decent dress, I just don’t think this captures the magic or the essence that the song and it’s music video has. Next week, please dare to go a bit crazy, because I think you could win this season if only you stepped outside of your comfort zone and kept an editorial approach.

brad'S CRITIQUES

I enjoy your heavy use of dark blue, and appropriate black on the shoes. You did a good job at matching the tone of the video to your colour palette. I like that some of your fabrics are loose and flowing; at the mercy of the wind just like the clothes in the video. My main criticism of this outfit comes with the inconsistency of the fabrics. Your bottom half is symmetrical whereas the top half is free-flowing. The combination of that top with the tied neck accessory is a very overdone combination that elicits nothing but eyerolls from me. Your scarf, while I understand its purpose, looks grossly out of place in comparison to the rest of the fabrics. This outfit is really low on technical merit, if I’m completely honest.

alex'S CRITIQUES

Honestly disgusting... The only thing I like about this is the sleeves blending with the neck boa and the asymmetry of that upper half but it's so below the level we expect now. The gross colours... you obviously have an idea of design but it feels like maybe you got too in your head this week because there's really nothing here

RHENNY

FILIP'S CRITIQUES

I gasped irl when the second you showed me this design. I’d say this is organized, energetic chaos which relates to Euphoria spectacularly. To begin with, your styling since day 1 has been impeccable: you don’t over-accessorize and you choose appropriate hair and shoes. I love how the green and black, especially with the chic bag, frames and captivates the color explosion in the middle. I have no clue how you made the top, it has a pattern to it and the colors compliment each other amazingly well. With the green and black you embody the song’s darker elements, and the vibrant top relates to the song’s euphoric, uplifting, crazy-in-love feeling. Hats off to you!

brad'S CRITIQUES

I think your colour palette is intriguing and I really enjoy the use of that underutilized norm shirt with the stitch marks on the collar. Your shoes are cute too. My biggest complaint for this outfit is that I find the silhouette to be very boxy and stiff, and I don’t get that from the video at all. Also some of your fabric choices seem out of place, mainly the handbag. The entire outfit is a bit outdated to me – I remember seeing a lot of these kinds of outfits when I began hosting PR in 2010. Coming off your task win, I was really expecting a lot more from you.

alex'S CRITIQUES

Very stunning and very gorgeous. That pink detail under the dark greens is so intriguing and shows you have a lot of guts to attempt that colour combination but maybe that's why it works so well. You nailed the balance of detail without doing too much. I think because you maintained a strong structured silhouette with the items you used, it allowed you to play around inside that. Very interesting look and makes me excited to see you play around with more challenges

FILIP'S CRITIQUES

This is by far the best design you've made so far, last week I claimed it would be interesting to see your growth and this week you have showed it more than anyone. By the way you compositioned this, it looks like you used a patterned fabric which is not an easy thing to do. It takes a lot for me to enjoy outfits with this much gray, but I think in this case it relates well to the video. The blue heels are a nice representation at the refrain of Soldi which is both cool and calming. I love how you managed to make the backpack, the shirt and the stripes of the pants merge so flawlessly. I am proud of you Zach!

brad'S CRITIQUES

Not only is this your strongest outfit so far, but I think this is my favourite outfit of Lidlterm! You have managed to beautifully replicate the straight, rigid, unmalleable fashion in the video while simultaneously toning it with intricate details that elevate it into the realm of high fashion. The colour pattern on the waist is drop-dead gorgeous, and I love the light brown lines running down the sides of the outfit. The blue on the heels was the perfect subtle kiss of attitude this outfit needed. I am at a loss for words, this outfit is flawless. 100%. Absolutely amazing work, Zach!

alex'S CRITIQUES

I'm not really a fan of this purely because it looks almost identical to Rhennys look last week in an almost obnoxious way. You just have pants on instead and a different hair. Basically. It's a cute look but I think more colour work could have been done here, I understand the dark vibe but it's left feeling flat and dull rather than mysterious and I just think we've seen this last week.

FILIP'S CRITIQUES

The glasses are unexpected, but they compliment the sharply modern black and metallic features in a sublime way. You are an absolute pro at working with colors and this is no exception, the color scheme is so appealing, the transition is done in such a beautiful way. There is an issue though, this is basically the same dress you did task 1. It’s the exact same belt, shoes, skirt and top in different colors. Had you chosen a more original silhouette this might’ve won. You gave such creative silhouettes week 2 and 3, please don't stop now!

brad'S CRITIQUES

I liked this outfit better when you submitted it on Week 1. Same shirt, same dress, same belt, same shoes, same head-on pose… Are you out of ideas, or were you merely preoccupied with something else when designing this outfit? The colours are cute and I see blatant allusions to the Soldi video, but I wish you took a more artistic approach to the fashion in the video instead of just duplicating the colour palette of the background into a premade outfit. For me, this was not a good performance at all.

alex'S CRITIQUES

Tired at this point. We've already seen something very close to this in week 1 and it's not very impressive to recycle looks and concepts in the same season. The look itself is well done and I enjoy the glasses and black layering over the colour blocked underneath but this isn't a very strong week for you

There were a lot of strong submissions this week, I've decided to give the win to the designer who I feel like had a good technique and captured the magic of one song and yet expanded on it by incorporating themselves as a designer and their own interpretation. Congratulations .Uhu you succeeded at taking my favorite song of all time and creating an outfit which does it justice. Well done to Goofyzik and Rhenny who both created outstanding designs and managed to make top 3.

Unfortunately, Netals is leaving the competition. You are a designer relatively new to me, and I feel like I got to know you during your time at LidlTerm. You have tons of raw talent and a good eye for styling, I hope you keep designing and you will absolutely crush the next longterm you enter. Thank you for your designs!
