task 8 - just gonna stand there and watch me burn?!

Welcome to the eight panel of LidlTerm season 1. For this week, the final 6 had to create two outfits inspired by an episode of Ugly Betty: one in which they could pick any theme, and the other one had to be a version of the first outfit, but after being damaged by fire. I know almost all of you found this to be a frustrating task, but it led to some really interesting results, so I am very happy I gave you 6 this task.

Cinthia, this is amazing. Your first outfit resembles a Japanese video game aesthetic: there is a lot of color and details and yet it all works. It is difficult to make those shorts look suitable for a fashion task, yet you succeeded. You look like a walking, ticking time bomb on steroids and sugar. I especially enjoyhow the pink/red fabric on the left is fighting with the brown coat, and I am impressed by the fact that you knew the shoes had to have a dose of crazy as well so that the energy of it didn't fizzle out. Your burnt look is great, I have seen that t-shirt a million times but I have never seen it like this, it reminds me of crustaceans. There is something vicious about the burnt design, and this was the perfect time for you to utilize those shorts which rarely look good.

I am conflicted about this, although you have two chic looks in which the layering is neat and the colors are aesthetically pleasing (like they always are with you), I just don't think you took the opportunity to showcase what you can really do with a task like this. The only thing that is altered between the first and the second look are the colors and the skirt: the jacket takes up such large space of your canvas and looks only slightly changed which is a shame, since it makes me more or less only able to judge your design from the waist down. I don't think it benefitted you that your first look already looks shrivelled and damaged, I must say though that I enjoy the idea of the skirt shrinking in length and getting wider, since that's the effect that occurs to certain materials when exposed to fire and heat. I think both of these looks are good, but they are a bit unimaginative for the task.

Your submission this week is a perfect representation of what the task was about. Your first outfit gives off a futuristic, luxurious, jet set feeling. The blue and the turquoise is what makes this design look expensive: other colors wouldn’t have created the same effect. The oversized cuffs are fabulous and this looks like your task 3 submission re-sewn and dyed into something better. The sunglasses/headpiece is suitable, although I think it’s weird how they went from a really dark blue to a lighter blue. Your use of the military jacket to convey fire damages on the coat is honestly the most creative use of that jacket I’ve ever seen, and the belt, which is a headache for every PR-host, is actually integrated well and looks like threads/shredded fabric rather than typical fringe. The funniest, most charismatic part of this design is that it looks like the coat got shorter due to the fire.

You as a designer, throughout this competition, has been stuck a bit in 2012. I haven't had an issue with that really, since I myself am a bit stuck in the past and also because you've compensated with having an incredible eye for styling and an impeccable level of taste. I fear, however, that you stumbled this week because of that. I adore the colors on your first outfit and you are one of few who know how to make nude colors look good: I have seen this dress many times and it is horribly outdated, even though I enjoy how the nude fringe breaks through the blue. I am a fan of you using that belt to portray the belt having been burnt and shrivellled, I just think it is a lot of black without any exciting textures or shades. The golden strap around your shoulder and down your chest is hot, but the tattoo irritates me, I just want to rip it off.

You actually watched the episode of Ugly Betty that this task is stolen from, and I am so impressed you decided to do some research. It takes one type of talent to design an outfit, and it takes a whole other talent to style an outfit and you showcase both talents. The pink and black top is one of my favorite separates designed this season and the biker jacket, which is difficult to match, goes perfectly with the top. The hair brings a really fresh aura and I rarely enjoy pink and red together, yet the skirt is beautiful. I just wish the first look was a bit more unexpected and you could’ve stepped outside of your comfort zone more because this is lowkey a safe design with little risks taken. Your second design makes me think of some popstar performing at an American, hot spring break party. I know you told me that your idea was to have the design be of the type of fabric that gets brighter when it's warm/burned, for me it's not really what this challenge was asking for and I would have never thought that these two looks are related in any way had I not known what the task is.

You are colorblind and yet you have always been one to work and experiment with color combinations, which I really commend you for. Keeping in mind that you are colorblind, I must still say that I find your submission confusing and a bit unfortunate. The pre-fire outfit looks like it should be the burnt, second outfit: it has that slightly ashy, dirty and rough texture in varying intensity across the top and it would actually make sense that some materials and fabrics which are mint green would end up looking like that after being damaged by fire. The first look also features more black: I really don’t see how a top like that could turn into a pristine, mint green color. I also have no clue why you thought a yellow ear was a good idea, it doesn’t look like anything else, and the whole design just reminds me of an Oompa Loompa going to a rave.. For your second look, I actually love the red dress and I think this looks a bit like an evolved version of something from your Snawlterm 6 collection, which is one of my all time favorites and an aesthetic I hope to see more from you. I also like how the shoes went from white to an ashy white/gray, which helps tell the story.
Congratulations HerbyMainsted, you are the winner of the fire task. You've come close to winning a task several times, this time you got it almost perfectly right. Throughout the competition, your growth has been immense and your taste level has improved drastically. Well done to Cinthia and Goofyzik who both managed to create sparks.
My heart sank when I realized that I had to do this: Rhenny, you have been eliminated from LidlTerm season 1. I didn't really know much about you before you took part, and now I can say that I am one of your biggest fans and if you ever need anything, I got your back. You have an aesthetic that I am in love with and I still hope you do a collection to show people you could've won: I'd post it.

The semi-final task is now available
