TASK 3 BURNING MAN
showup.png
edit (1).png

Welcome to the third panel of LidlTerm S2!

The designers were challenged to create an avant garde design inspired by the festival Burning Man. The criteria for the designers was that they would capture the essence of the festival with their outfit. The festival is all about colors, innovation, unlimited creativity, freedom, celebrating life, breaking the social limits that holds you back and finding an inner spark or flame.

Let's see how they did!

A literal take on Burning Man but also a gorgeous one. I asked for avant garde outfits this week and just like in week 1 you mix avant garde with formal elements very well. The attention to detail is fantastic, you extended the charcoal texture of the skirt with movement and the shoes. The poncho and the bag are regularly used items in the PR-world and yet I am amazed that no one has ever integrated the two items in a way this flawless before. The transition from charcoal black to gray is so soothing and you managed to create a top that actually looks like it is on fire and that also symbolizes hope and joy. The choice to go minimal with the styling in a task like this was risky but I think it paid off. For the next task, I am personally challenging you to create something that isn't as formal because I've seen you do great outfits that are a bit more casual.

Oh Lee. When you showed me what you were working on, a completely different outfit, I thought ''wow! That is probably going to be the winning outfit this week''. This other outfit that you submitted puts you at great risk for elimination. I think this is your 4th PR-longterm and yet you haven't overcome the problem you've had in every single one: you don't read the task criteria thoroughly enough. You explained that the print, which is really cool, symbolizes a blue flame and I will give you credit for that way of thinking as that is what will make you stand out in the crowd. However, your outfit is not avant garde nor colorful. Your model looks like a stiff librarian who was forced to join a group of people attending Burning Man so she put on a sweater and a jacket. You have a certain aesthetic and you usually do an amazing job with it, you could've easily created some urban street-wear that was avant garde, like you did in week 1. I'm sorry to say that your design is just a bit boring and it has a cold energy to it (even without the print) when this task was about creating something truly worthy of a party that takes place in the desert and that is about living like it's your last day.

snawl

I wasn’t too sure about this outfit when I first saw it, but the more I looked at it the more it grew on me and now I quite like it. The helmet is the star of this design, it looks rugged, a little bit dirty and it has a festive energy to it. I want to wear it in a crowd of people and jump up and down while music plays, it looks like Snawl x Daft Punk. I absolutely love the color palette because I am a huge sucker for anything desert-themed and I believe that incorporating teal brought a refreshing contrast to your design that helps uplift the earthy tones. The teal details seem to represent lights or a certain energy and they were necessary to create that Burning Man-feeling. The only problem with your design is that you’ve constructed great separates that are more interesting to look at separately rather than together as a whole outfit.

Haha, you kind of look like the hot-air balloon you're posing on! The strongest aspect of your design is without a doubt the color story because most of the structure is nothing to write home about. Despite the fact that this look has been done many time in various versions, I still can't help but to like it. This design captures that fun, energetic, laissez-faire vibe that Burning Man is about and it is an outfit that looks simple yet complicated. I especially adore the orange straps and the custom bandana you constructed. Your design is like a sugary energy drink, it elevates your mood and I could totally picture someone wearing this at the festival. Moving forward you have to do something a bit more unexpected and spend a little more time creating an outfit that is original.

This is my favorite design you've done in this season so far. You have constructed a flirty, summery mini dress that also has a bit of rock and roll to it. The facemask that you created matches the dress and the shoes perfectly. I love that it looks a bit dirty and damaged in a sexy way and it also connects to the desert setting of Burning Man. I wanna see someone wear this while jumping up and down. You are the king of complicated, voluminous designs so I think a lot of people will be surprised to see you go with this more commercial and less-is-more approach but I am really happy I got to see this new side from you. There isn't really more to say about this dress because there is not a lot of it. You have yet to create an outfit in LidlTerm in which your model shows their face, and that will change in the next task (evil laughter).

cinthia

Cinthia this is amazing! You look like a bird waiting to spread it's wings. The acid green accessories are a bit unexpected but I also don't think any other color would've been as effective or spot on considering what the task is about. Something I really fancy is that you used the wing-accessories, the backpack and the cyan top to create what looks like even bigger wings, and yes this is PR and not RPDR but the task was Burning Man. I can almost hear some electric music when I look at your design. There is something really majestic about this look and at first I wasn't so sure I enjoyed the green pants but now I get that they help accentuate the wings. The print on the backpack plays with the more subtle print on the shoulders and overall this outfit just makes me happy and inspired and that is what this task was all about. One of your strengths as a designer is that you can create outfits which evokes feelings, at least inside of me.

You accessorized the shit out of this outfit and I love that you did that, even though that isn't always recommended. This is not the most striking, the most complex nor the most impressive outfit I have ever seen but you are a designer that loves to create outfits with tons of drama and energy to them and it appears that you have utilized your greatest strengths effectively for this task. There are tiny pops of turquoise that is just dancing around the outfit, almost teasing the viewer. To me, this outfit plays on the more spiritual and new age aspects that can be found in the Burning Man festival and I really appreciate that as nobody else did that. I am a fan of how richly texturized the accessories are while you chose a simple and more lowkey dress as a base. The pink belt isn't flattering to be honest but overall this is weird in a great way.

Rise like a phoenix, Kaytlin! I feel like this is the first time in a long time that I get to see the old, creative and inventive Kaytlin with a fire under her ass (no pun intended). This is on the same level as most looks you gave in Snawlterm S6 and I hope you keep it up like this.  This was both a smart and yet literal way to interpret the theme ‘’Burning Man’’ and I absolutely love it. You chose the perfect top to go along with the texture and color of the necklace and it was a fun move to add the wings to extend the fire-print of the pants. You look like a whole event in the best of ways. There is an energy and a passion in your design that I relate to the feeling that Burning Man evokes. I especially like the proportionizing and styling: the pants look heavy and had you paired them with an equally busy top that covered the arms you would’ve completely lost the perfect balance that your outfit has.

This one conflicts me Herby. On one hand, I think this is a cool, stylish outfit which represents your aesthetic. On the other hand, this is mostly just that one bag we've seen 100 times and it's doing 85 % of the job here. Yes, Alydaman used it too but in a way we (or I) have never seen. The way you created a semi-new accessory with it by incorporating the belt is fabulous and the accessories you chose is what really helps elevate your design into the Burning Man area. I believe the leather jacket, although it looks decent, drags the outfit down into more of a department store outfit rather than something one would wear to celebrate life like there is no tomorrow. You're so often good at picking the right shoes but the heels do absolutely nothing for your design, they would make sense if the outfit was more busy. You have created so many insanely great statement pieces before and this was the time to do it again and unfortunately that didn't happen.

Is this an avant garde design? I'm not sure it is. Is this an absolutely gorgeous dress? Absolutely! I have been lusting for a really impactful red dress this season and finally I get one. The textural transition is really intriguing and your outfit looks moist and almost wet which is great for the Burning Man theme. It is not often I see a couple of heels be this impactful and those yellow ones u chose really takes your outfit to the next level. There is also a subtle pair of green buttons hiding on your outfit which adds a nuance to the cyan middle part and I just love tiny details like that. My favorite aspect is that the top has a rugged quality to it and the matching bottom is more minimalistic in its textures and yet it all matches. Had you constructed a headpiece or a mask to go along with your design then this might've been in the top 3 but this is great work nonetheless.

Your design in blue is so soothing and yet exciting. I have never seen anyone create an accessory that is so extensive and it might be my favorite original accessory of the season, there is such a playfulness and a cockiness to it. You used a golden moustache to extend the earring which is just further shows how inventive and creative you are. Mixing the blue butterfly tattoo with a subtle orange bikini-top was a bit unexpected but I think the contrast is lovely. I also enjoy how you added a different, darker shade of blue to the bottom of the boots to bring a greater depth. This is one of the designs that did the best job at conveying the vibe of ''I am here to party and celebrate everything I am'', you didn't overthink this one, instead you just had fun with it and it shows.

Congratulations Cinthia, the way your outfit envokes hope and joy and it's electrifying quality is what brought you to the very top and you are the winner of this task. Well done to alydaman and .Cow. for making it to the top 3, you both produced winner-worthy outfits so you should both be proud of yourselves and carry on designing like this. Overall this was a week in which the quality of the outfits were fantastic so I want to give a big thank you to all 11 of you for putting on such an amazing fashion show.

Antheia-Ceres is unfortunately disqualified for not submitting. Antheia told me about 20 hours before deadline that she had an outfit in the works and that she would submit ''soon'' but it never happened despite my many efforts to reach out to her. Antheia, I don't think your intentions were to be disrespectful, but the way this happened was quite disrespectful because you had more than a week to submit and I spend tons of time and energy to create a fun experience with this longterm and I feel like you didn't really recognize that. I am still a fan of you and I wish you the best.

gnge, it really really breaks my heart to eliminate you this week but I see no other option, your outfit is sadly my least favorite this week by far and I can't have 11 designers in the next task out of practical reasons. You are without a doubt one of my favorite designers and if you apply for Snawlterm S8 I know you have a great chance at winning, I hope to see you in it. Never try to be anyone else as a designer because you are brilliant and unique.
